Why I Am Involved

The issue of Human Trafficking was first brought to my attention at the beginning of 2014 when Christine Caine spoke at my church. She runs a global Human Trafficking organization called The A21 Campaign for the purpose of rescuing women from modern day slavery. When I heard what was happening around the world, I was shocked. How could it be that women were being lured away from their homes, forced into drug addiction, physically locked up, forced to have sex with any man willing to pay the right price, and even subsequently sold as property?

I was ready to fight for these women.

Since I was under the impression Human Trafficking was not happening in the United States (which I later learned was incorrect), I began to support A21’s efforts in Eastern Europe. I also began researching the issue to find out more. As I did, I realized that this was not just something happening overseas, but also in America, and possibly even in my own backyard. I then began to search for organizations that existed in the U.S. to combat Human Trafficking.

Soon after I began my search, my boyfriend told me about a woman he had met named Jennifer Crow who had started a 10629581_10206148230491172_7268382276050571387_n (1)Human Trafficking organization called Beautiful Dream Society. When he said she had opened up a shelter right here in Oklahoma City I couldn’t believe it! I was SO EXCITED! While it was very important to me to support the rescuing of women from afar, I also wanted to work with victims face to face, one on one. I wanted to personally offer them unconditional love, care, and encouragement; help them work through the trauma they had suffered; provide hope and a vision for their futures; and help meet their physical and emotional needs.

Although Human Trafficking looks different here in America, it is still just as egregious. Right here in Oklahoma, a trafficker will prey upon a vulnerable woman, tell her he loves her, and promise to take care of her. He will feed her drugs so that she becomes addicted and is no longer in control of herself. He will beat her. He will threaten to kill her and her family if she doesn’t have sex with whomever is willing to pay. He will move her from city to city and state to state so that she is no longer connected to her family or friends. His sole goal is to make money off of the sale of her body.

This, too, is modern day slavery!

Understanding this, there was no way I was going to pass up this opportunity! I contacted Beautiful Dream Society and learned the steps I would need to take to start working with the women in the shelter. I have now taken those steps and am a very proud, yet very humbled, House Mom! I am absolutely blessed by the fact that I have the opportunity to do this. There is nothing else I would rather do.
