Most of the kids in the Beautiful Dream Society Children’s Homes don’t have parents to teach them about their heritage. They enjoy the privilege of indoor plumbing and proper education but lack some of the communal elements they would receive with a traditional upbringing. To combat this and fill the gaps, BDS takes the children on special field trips to learn about the world around them.
Our children live in the town of Maseru, Lesotho, in Southern Africa. In July, the BDS children had a chance to take a field trip to a rural village of Basotho. There, they were able to learn about life in a farming community and even meet their first donkey!
The trip was quite a hike from a dirt road up the mountain to the village homes. The children learned how to take the corn from the cob and grind it by hand to make maize meal. This maize meal, also known as corn meal, is used to prepare a common dish in Lesotho called “papa.” Papa is similar to grits in America, but it has a stiffer texture.
The children also hiked to a massive boulder on a mountain and saw ancient drawings by the San people, an ancient hunter/gatherer tribe that occupied Lesotho long ago. The children enjoyed learning about their ancestors and the unique heritage of this land.
Special field trips like this don’t happen often, but we strive to provide a well-rounded life for these children. Donations to Beautiful Dream Society help make these trips possible, as well as additional housing and education accommodations for at-risk children.
Proverbs 19:17 says, “If you help the poor, you are lending to the Lord—and he will repay you!”
Note: The children in the Beautiful Dream Society Children’s Homes live in a rented property in the town of Maseru. BDS has never owned buildings in Lesotho, and we were only recently able to secure a property for permanent Children’s Homes thanks to a generous donation from Victory Church in Oklahoma City. If you would like to contribute toward building our own Children’s Homes, visit our Donation Page to get started.
