Confronting gender-based violence

Gender-based violence (GBV) is an insidious crisis that manifests across all societies, disproportionately affecting women and girls. It encompasses a wide range of human rights violations, including sexual assault, domestic violence, emotional abuse, and coercive control. The consequences of GBV are profound, impacting not only the physical and mental health of survivors but also their economic stability and community integration.

Part of what we address at Beautiful Dream Society is not only giving survivors the tools to recover from their experiences but also helping to advocate and educate others about the things that cause gender-based violence, including human trafficking.

Understanding gender-based violence

Gender-based violence refers to harmful acts directed at an individual based on their gender. It is rooted in gender inequality, the abuse of power, and harmful norms. It is a serious violation of human rights and a health emergency, as GBV significantly impacts women’s physical, mental, emotional, and sexual health and prevents them from fully participating in society.

The consequences of gender-based violence

The impact of GBV extends beyond the immediate harm to individuals. It has long-lasting implications for the well-being of families and communities. Survivors often experience lasting psychological trauma, including depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress. Economically, GBV can lead to decreased productivity and increased healthcare costs, perpetuating cycles of poverty and dependency.

Our multi-faceted approach to combatting GBV

GBV is pervasive, and it can affect different people in different ways. But we don’t have to accept this as a part of life. At Beautiful Dream Society, we are deeply committed to combating gender-based violence through comprehensive strategies that include education, advocacy, and direct support. In Lesotho, we operate shelters that provide a safe haven for survivors, offering them the necessary medical, psychological, and legal support they need to heal and rebuild their lives.

Education and awareness

Education is a powerful tool in our fight against GBV. BDS conducts workshops and training sessions aimed at changing societal attitudes and norms that perpetuate gender inequality and violence. By raising awareness and educating both men and women about GBV, we can challenge and change the harmful stereotypes and practices that underlie such violence.

Advocacy and legal support

Advocacy is crucial in influencing policies and legal frameworks that protect the rights of women and girls. BDS tirelessly advocates for stronger protections and legal reforms that will hold perpetrators accountable and provide justice for survivors. We also offer legal assistance to survivors, helping them navigate the complex legal system to seek justice and redress. In 2024, we even added a police liaison for our organization in Lesotho to help aid in this process.

Holistic care

Our shelters do more than offer a safe space; they are centers of transformation and healing. Here, survivors receive tailored services that meet their needs—from medical treatment and psychotherapy to vocational training. This holistic care model ensures that survivors leave our shelters safe and empowered to lead independent and fulfilled lives.

Empowerment through self-advocacy and determination

Central to BDS’s philosophy is the empowerment of survivors through self-advocacy and determination. Empowering individuals to advocate for themselves and make informed decisions is critical to their recovery and independence.

During the recent 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign, we focused on these themes, helping to foster a sense of agency among survivors in our care and around the world. This global campaign underscores the importance of community and international support in combating GBV and reinforces our commitment to these values.

The fight against gender-based violence requires the support of the entire community. Here’s how you can help:

  • Educate yourself and others: Learn about GBV and share this knowledge with friends, family, and peers. Awareness is the first step towards change.
  • Support BDS: Your donations help us continue our vital work. Consider contributing financially or volunteering your time.
  • Advocate for change: Support local and national policies that protect survivors and hold perpetrators accountable. Your voice matters.

Join Beautiful Dream Society in our mission to eradicate gender-based violence in Lesotho. Together, we can create a safer, more equitable world for all.
