In recent months, our organization has faced one of its toughest challenges. Following an unexpected suspension of a crucial anti-trafficking grant from the U.S. State Department, we encountered a significant funding shortfall.
This grant, vital to sustaining Lesotho’s only anti-trafficking shelter and our Transit Monitoring Project, was abruptly paused due to new regulatory measures on foreign spending. From February through April, this loss of $29,000 in funding stretched our resources thinner than ever.
Your generosity in action
During this period of uncertainty, you, our donors, stepped up in an incredible way. Your timely contributions ensured that our Crisis Care Shelter continued to operate amid one of the busiest months we’ve ever seen. In February alone, we provided refuge and care to 10 women and minor girls, many of whom arrived with severe medical and psychological needs.
Thanks to you, these survivors received essential medical treatments, nourishment, and counseling—services critical to their recovery and rehabilitation. Your support made a tangible difference in their lives, offering them a chance at healing and a new beginning.
The impact of suspended services
However, the financial strain also forced us to make some difficult decisions. We had to suspend our Transit Monitoring Project, which included shutting down two newly operational border posts. These posts quickly became crucial in our efforts to identify and intercept potential trafficking victims. The suspension affected our services and our dedicated staff, including twelve border monitors, their supervisor, and a Police Liaison, all of whom were put on temporary leave.
This reduction in our operational capacity means that traffickers face fewer obstacles in exploiting vulnerable individuals across Lesotho and South Africa.

As we endeavor to restore full functionality to our Transit Monitoring Project and continue uninterrupted support at the shelter, your ongoing partnership is more crucial than ever.
