A day of discovery at Mohale Dam

At Beautiful Dream Society, we believe healing happens not just through safety and care, but also through adventure, joy, and meaningful connections to culture and place. That’s why, several times a year, we take the children and survivors in our care on special educational outings across Lesotho—giving them the chance to explore their beautiful homeland and make memories that last a lifetime.

Our most recent trip took 26 children, clients, and housemothers on an unforgettable day at Mohale Dam, one of Lesotho’s largest and most stunning engineering landmarks. Tucked high in the mountains, Mohale Dam is a vital reservoir that transports fresh spring water across districts and even into neighboring South Africa.

But for the children on this trip, it was about more than learning how water moves—it was about standing in awe of something bigger than themselves, and being reminded of the strength and beauty surrounding them.

Basotho ponies and first-time horseback adventures

For many of the children, one of the biggest highlights of the day was the chance to ride Basotho ponies—the strong, sure-footed horses known for navigating Lesotho’s steep mountain passes for generations. With wide eyes and nervous giggles, the kids climbed aboard, many riding horses for the first time. All but the youngest among them, the brave 4-year-olds, gave it a try—some grinning ear-to-ear, others gripping tightly, but all sharing in the thrill of the experience.

These moments of courage and excitement are about so much more than just a pony ride. They are about building confidence, learning new things, and experiencing joy in ways many of these children have never had the chance to.

Joy on the water

As if riding ponies wasn’t adventurous enough, the children also had the opportunity to enjoy their first-ever boat ride across the reservoir. With their life jackets securely fastened, they boarded the boat, some cautiously, others bouncing with excitement.

Once on the water, laughter and song filled the air, as the children soaked in the sights, the wind on their faces, and the simple magic of floating together on this great expanse of water. For many, it was their first time on a boat, and the delight was undeniable.

Why these experiences matter

For children and survivors of trafficking, abuse, and neglect, life is often defined by hardship. But at BDS, we know that part of breaking cycles of trauma is offering moments of hope, freedom, and discovery.

These outings help nurture curiosity, build confidence, and create joyful memories. They allow our children to experience what it means just to be a kid—to laugh, explore, and feel connected to their homeland and culture. And none of this would be possible without you.

These trips, from the bus rides to the meals, from the boat rentals to the pony handlers, are only possible because of the generosity of our donors. Your support gives these children more than safety—it gives them joy, adventure, and a sense of belonging.

Thank you for standing with us. Thank you for giving these children the gift of discovery.
