At Beautiful Dream Society, we care deeply about the well-being of the vulnerable women and children we serve in Lesotho. Behind every safe home and stable routine is a group of women who make it all happen: our house mothers.
These dedicated caregivers live with and care for the children at our shelter and children’s homes. Many of the kids they care for have been orphaned, neglected, or rescued from dangerous situations. Caring for them is not just a job but an act of daily sacrifice and love.
That is why BDS is also committed to supporting our house mothers emotionally, professionally, and practically.
Training in trauma-informed caregiving
In August, our house mothers participated in conflict management training designed specifically for caregivers. The session helped them understand the causes and types of conflict and how to resolve issues in healthy, constructive ways.
The training included real-life scenarios, and the women were encouraged to share their own experiences. Each participant left with a practical assignment: reflect on a recent conflict they handled and identify how the training could be applied. This kind of trauma-informed caregiving support is critical to creating safe, peaceful homes for our children.
Women’s Month celebration and empowerment
In celebration of Women’s Month in Lesotho, BDS hosted a time for our house mothers to come together, share words of encouragement, and exchange small gifts. It was a meaningful moment to honor their work and the value they bring to our organization and community.
Recognizing the emotional demands of caregiving is essential. Our house mothers do not just show up for the kids. They pour their hearts into healing children who have endured significant trauma. Honoring their contributions is part of how we retain great caregivers and protect the culture of our homes.
Creativity as therapy
Another recent highlight was the arts and crafts program, where house mothers created flowerpots, vases, and decorative items. This activity provided a creative outlet, stress relief, and a way to connect with the children in their care.
Some of the finished pieces will be sold at local markets, allowing the house moms and children to feel proud of their work and build skills.
Why this matters
Supporting our house mothers strengthens the entire caregiving ecosystem. When caregivers feel seen, trained, and supported, the children benefit too. At BDS, we are committed to rescuing and protecting children and building strong, loving environments where they can heal and grow.
By supporting BDS, you are not just funding programs. You are investing in real people who are doing life-changing work every day.
