A story of survival and resilience

Every story that unfolds carries its weight, its unique blend of sorrow and hope. One of our clients, Maria, has a story that reminds us of the world’s dark realities and the incredible strength within those who fight to reclaim their lives.

Maria’s story

Maria is a 30-year-old woman from Leribe who arrived at a shelter in Lesotho, Africa,  in February 2024. Due to her large family and financial struggles, Maria faced numerous challenges. She could not pursue an education, married early, had a daughter, and returned home after the marriage failed, unemployed and vulnerable.

Maria, desperate to support her daughter and family, accepted a job at a mining town guesthouse in South Africa. A neighbor covered travel expenses, but upon arrival, she found herself in a nightmare. The job she had been promised was a lie.

Maria was forced to work without pay at a spare parts shop and was saddled with a debt she could never hope to repay—a debt that carried a crushing 35% interest rate. Maria’s employer ended up demanding sexual favors from her, citing it as customary. Maria became trapped by debt and fear, so she complied. She was forced into prostitution for more money, and her life became a cycle of exploitation and despair.

Then, the situation took another turn when Maria discovered she was pregnant with her employer’s child. He promised to support her if she stopped engaging in prostitution, a twisted offer of relief that only deepened her sense of entrapment.

Maria’s escape

Maria wasn’t alone in her suffering. She was living with other girls at the guesthouse; together, they found the courage to plan an escape. They scaled the high walls of their prison and fled, risking everything for the chance at freedom.

Maria eventually returned home, but it was not the moment of relief she had hoped for. It was only the beginning of another battle. She was traumatized by the unwanted pregnancy and, uncertain about her future, she didn’t know where to turn. That’s when she was referred to the Anti-Trafficking Shelter, which would become her sanctuary.

Maria’s ongoing recovery

Maria found healing at the Anti-Trafficking Shelter, where she began psychotherapy to manage her emotions. She is rebuilding her sense of self and preparing for her baby by shopping for clothes and reclaiming control. Her situation caused lots of tension within her family, but the Anti-Trafficking Shelter provided education on trafficking and trauma for her family.

Maria’s story shows survival and resilience, with community support aiding her journey to healing. Her story is an example to everyone.  The Anti-Trafficking Shelter is honored to walk alongside her, offering care and hope for a brighter future. Maria’s story is not just hardship but transformation, and the Anti-Trafficking Shelter is proud to be part of her healing path.
