Empowering survivors through trauma-informed care

Trauma-informed care is a cornerstone of our mission. At Beautiful Dream Society, we assist women, girls, and boys who have experienced human trafficking, sexual assault, gender-based violence, and other traumatic events. Our staff understands the complex thoughts, feelings, and emotions that trauma survivors face, and they use specialized care to accommodate those needs.

What is trauma?

Trauma is a person’s emotional response to distressing experiences. Unlike ordinary hardships, traumatic events tend to be unexpected and unpredictable, such as sexual assault, physical violence, auto accidents, military combat, natural disasters, or the sudden loss of a loved one.

Because trauma is rapid and unplanned, it can result in a series of powerful emotions. Trauma survivors often feel scared, unsafe, on-edge, and untrusting as they strive to reclaim control of their lives. This has long-lasting effects, regardless of the severity of the trauma or the age of the survivor.

The long-lasting effects of trauma

Trauma can affect every aspect of a person’s life, from social interactions to work to school and beyond. Trauma survivors may experience:

  • Emotional disturbances
  • Extreme anxiety
  • Anger issues
  • Sadness
  • Survivor’s guilt
  • Disassociation
  • Inability to feel pleasure
  • PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • Ongoing physical pain
  • Trouble sleeping/fatigue
  • Feelings of worthlessness
  • Difficulty trusting others

BDS works hard to empower trauma survivors to overcome these obstacles and improve their quality of life. Every person and situation is unique, but peace is always the goal.

Why trauma-informed care is so important

Through trauma-informed care, our staff can provide the ideal resources and environment to help survivors thrive. This involves a mix of compassion, patience, respect, targeted mental health care, and judgment-free support. Our approach is designed to benefit our clients and protect our caregivers simultaneously.

Healing from trauma is a lifelong journey that our clients face every day. We see how bravely and boldly they choose to wake up every day, and we are inspired by their courage. Beautiful Dream Society provides love, understanding, and support to allow them to heal in their own way and time.

The grim reality of sexual assault in Lesotho

Lesotho has some of the worst rape statistics in the world, second only to Botswana. There are 89.2 reported accounts of sexual assault per 100,000 people in Lesotho, and that does not take into account the thousands of incidents that go unreported each year.

What happens when an adoption doesn’t work out?

Lesotho has a large population of orphans, largely due to the poverty and lack of resources in the region. Some of these children are lucky enough to be adopted or reunited with distant family members, but those situations do not work out for everyone.

End human trafficking.
